My Tree Damaged My Neighbors Home…Now What?

We get this question a lot at our agency and many policyholder’s are surprised to find that their policy does not typically cover the damage.  Typically, the claim is paid by the insurance company of the person whose property is damaged.  As long as there is not any negligence by our insured regarding the tree, your insurance company does not need to be involved in the repair.  Unfortunately, the relationship between the neighbors can be strained because the neighbor may have to pay a high deductible.  A solution could be splitting the cost of the Deductible so that the relationship can be restored.  There are times where the tree is a hazard and possibly dead and at this point it can be a negligence issue that your insurance company needs to investigate.  Bottom line, always call your agent to discuss your particular situation.
